This week's 10 To Answer features Knightfreak
1. Who are you and where are you from?
Knightfreak aka Alan Lawther.
I'm from the historical city of Winchester, in the south of the UK.
2. When did you start producing?
I have been producing for a good ten years now, I first started out using Reason when I was introduced to it by my friends dad who was producing some amazing deep house records at the time. I remember going home and installing it straight away after grabbing a copy, having hardly any sleep all week, as I was so infatuated with learning how to produce.
3. What are the tracks people should know you of?
I would definitely say my remix of ‘Hurricane’ by Kouncilhouse featuring the immensely talented vocalist Scarlett Quinn, as soon as I heard the vocal I knew which direction I wanted to take the track. I wanted to turn it into something that could quite easily be on repeat on my ipod, I believe I achieved that, it’s quite a nostalgic track for me. Also my debut solo release on Rub A Duck 'Princess Mononoke's moon rave EP', its a real mixed bag, covering a lot of my favorite styles, and of course my latest collaboration with Kouncilhouse and Ashley Slater, had so much great feedback from this track, people really seem to dig it.
4. What hard- and software do you use to produce your music?
Pretty basic really just an imac, a pair of 8" KRK Rokits, a midi Keyboard and Logic Pro, my favourite soft synth at the moment definitely has to be FM8, you can get some proper grimey sounds out of it. Also a mac book pro with Ableton for a live project I'm currently working on.
5. What are your musical influences?
I pull bits and pieces from everywhere really, i've got such a broad taste in music and generally pretty open minded when it comes music. Music has always been a massive part of my life, I don’t think I could actually function as a human without it. When it comes to writing music I can definitely say 90's rave massively influences me, I just love the epic chord progressions and overall euphoric feeling, I think its mainly from sub conscious memories form my teenage years.
6. Can you tell us something about your first dj gig?
Yeah it was at a local venue, The Railway its called, my friends dad that I mentioned earlier used to put on nights there, mainly house music, but we used to go down there and play Drum and Bass, we used to have such an awesome time, great friends and great music, I never got nervous the first time I played out, just more exited.
7. What's the coming gig you are really looking forward to and why?
Protocol in London, and because its for my partner in crime Kouncilhouse's birthday bash as well as his album launch, also to be able to play alongside legends such as Adamski will be pretty amazing.
8. What can we expect from you in the near future?
Im currently working on a lot of new tracks, with the main emphasis on bass experimenting with slower tempos around 100bpm, also as I mentioned before taking the live project that i'm currently working on to the stage.
9. Who's the artist you would love to make a track with (dead or alive)?
There are far too many artists who I would love to produce with to mention just one, Daft punk are definitely up there, Kraftwork, Aphex twin, J Dilla, also producers form the 70's like Gamble and Huff, those guys really knew how to make great music, and the Reggae artist little Roy, the guys a legend, I could go on all day. . .
10. Any personal message to the fans?
Stay in school, eat your greens, and rave safe!
